Here you can find my projects in Natural History film making. I research and write everything I make and present.
I am producing and making these projects under the name of Bald Crow Productions, and these films are in no way affiliated with my employer (BBC Bristol).
Solitary Bees (Garden Naturalist #1) - May 2020
Spring time is a time where life bursts out from the grip of Winter. As it progresses you can see a whole host of wildlife emerging, especially in gardens and parks.
This episode is a look into the busy lives of one of your garden's most common visitors; the Solitary Bee.
Also I had a minute of some outtakes for your enjoyment: https://youtu.be/3y2u1gGjDY0
A Step into the Ocean (5 min) - December 2019
Starting as another assessed project, this is the condensed story of the journey of Cetaceans. Looking from their roots on land to the largest animals ever to live on Earth. I move species by species through time. I investigate each adaptation and morphological alteration, visible or otherwise, which has led to the most diverse group of mammals in existence.
Additional information is in the “additional notes”, as well as further attributions.
Fathers of Evolution - December 2018
Starting as a University project, this turned quickly into an experiment for film making and my first go at an in-depth documentary.
This is the story of the origin of the theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, and the people behind it. I examine Lamarck, Mendel and Darwin; just three of the many faces which pushed and expanded this scientific advancement.
60 Seconds on Salmon - July 2018
This is a short, 1 take film of an audition for BBC Earth. It is the quick story of how Pacific Salmon find their way back to their breeding grounds. It’s a quick look at the transformation in their body morphology as well as what happens when millions of individuals finally die.
N.B. The lack of hair was due to medication I was on at the time. Just if you were wondering. And it has been sped up 20% to fit into 60 seconds, hence the wild arms, and abrupt end.
Bald Crows (Genus Picathartes) are a species of Rock Fowl inhabiting the jungle interior of Western Africa; from Guinea to Ghana. They are adaptable, socially loyal and intelligent as well as being careful builders. They also happen to be my favourite bird (and one of my favourite animals for that matter).
Cliché though it may be, Bald Crow productions strives to achieve the same as its small Passerine namesake. Picathartes are monogamous, but nest in small colonies, realising that the more individuals surrounding them, the more likely they are to succeed in raising a nest. Although not raising a nest any time soon, I want to surround myself and connect myself with people of similar ideologies and aims. This means communication with more scientists, conservationists and nature enthusiasts to achieve a better quality of work. I also want to reflect that loyalty, in this case to science and to anyone watching, by ensuring I am only ever presenting the truth, with referenced, robust evidence.
These Rock Fowl are careful builders, meticulously choosing a spot in a cave or cliff with good access to running water and foliage, but without getting too close to the trees. This ensures a good supply of mud and twigs to construct a cup-shaped nest. This is a unique way of making a nest for a jungle bird, but with preference for building the nest fastidiously around a wasp colony or incorporating one into the structure, ensures it to be an exceptionally structurally sound and resilient way of building . I want to achieve that same deep level of planning; ensuring a quality, well researched, interesting documentary to watch and ultimately to be structurally (and factually) sound in build. I want each to be unique, learning from previous projects, each an improvement and more engaging than the last.
I put a little bit of my heart and soul into each of these documentaries, along with the love of biology and the natural world that has driven me to this point in my life. Therefore I can only hope I have managed to achieve these goals and that you enjoy what you see and learn something new.

UPCOMING PROJECTS
There are currently several smaller projects, at the writing desk or in the cutting room, to look forward to. The list of currently in production are as follows:
1. The Galápagos: An Iguana's Story
This film reveals a little bit of the everyday life of a Galápagos Marine Iguana. Everyday they go out to eat algae, and every day they must return. How they do this; how they interact with each other, how they feed, how they navigate their way around the pools and how they avoid danger are just events in their daily routine. The film examines this as well as their adaptations, to understand what makes the only marine reptile so successful.
2. A Step into the Ocean; the Origin of Whales
While the 5 minute version is complete and available, there is a deeper story to be told...in something a little longer than 5 minutes. The project in development looks towards their evolutionary journey in the past, their present as well as their future. Their behaviours are investigated, and their pressures and threats are evaluated, including an interview with a leading researcher in the field. It will be a longer more in depth look into the evolution of the cetaceans.
For additional notes and thoughts I had about the films, please see the "additional notes" document at the bottom of the page. It explains thought processes as well as and how I put them together,
